Formations dominated by the thermophile, often calciphile, heathers Erica multiflora and Erica manipuliflora, best developed in the thermo-Mediterranean zones of southern and eastern Spain, the Balearics, Sardinia, Sicily, Pantelleria, southern Italy, southern Greece and the Aegean, Mediterranean Anatolia, Cyprus and coastal Mediterranean North Africa.
